I’m Bart, a computer science professor at Ghent University

I have a passion for data science, education and building things. Over the years, I’ve combined my research interests and teaching experience to create tools and platforms that enhance both scientific discovery and learning. I believe that technology can drive progress in many fields, and I strive to make complex topics accessible and engaging for students and researchers alike.

My journey in academia and software development has led to the creation of two key projects: Unipept, a data-analysis tool for metaproteomics, and Dodona, a platform designed to help students learn coding through interactive exercises. Dodona has since transitioned from university project to a spinoff company where I serve as a co-founder and CTO. These projects reflect my dedication to bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and practical, impactful applications.

What I Do

Unipept

Unipept is a data-analysis tool for metaproteomics. I started this project as part of my PhD research.

Dodona

Dodona is an online exercise platform for learning to code. This platform started as an internal university tool, but is now a spin-off company.

Teaching

I teach several courses at Ghent University: Software Engineering Lab 2, Data Visualization, and Big Data Science.
